PNEUMOTHORAX
⁃ A collapsed lung.⁃ This condition occurs when air leaks into the space between the lungs and chest wall. A blunt or penetrating chest injury, certain medical procedures or lung disease can cause a pneumothorax.
⁃ CAUSES
⁃ An injury such as a rib fracture.
⁃ Primary spontaneous pneumothorax is likely due to the formation of small sacs of air (blebs) in lung tissue that rupture, causing air to leak into the pleural space.
⁃ SYMPTOMS
⁃ shortness of breath.
⁃ TREATMENT
⁃ When a pneumothorax is large, a needle or tube is used to remove excess air.
